The President of Chad, Idriss Deby, has been murdered by rebels.
According to the army in Chad, he was killed in a gun battle with rebels over the weekend.
The army announced his death on television Tuesday, April 20, 2021.
The army noted that the late Deby had gone to the front line at the weekend to visit troops battling rebels based across the border in Libya.
He died after being projected to win his sixth term of office, with provisional election results showing he had 80% votes.
His government has been dissolved, the army says.
A military council is expected to govern for the next 18 months.
Mr Deby came to power in an armed uprising in 1990.
